What is a Travelers Notebook? The Blog Series Part 2

I can't, simply cannot, be in serious making mode if I am with someone I enjoy talking to.  I don't know how many times I've had to relearn this lesson.  So, take yesterday, for example.  Dana came over and we were going to whip up a couple of passport size notebooks.  Easy-ish, right?  In theory, yes.  In my actual actual crafting world, not so much.

First of all, I simply talk too much and it's been at least a month since I've seen her in person, so I talked waaaay too much.  So, fact number1 is that I cannot craft and talk at the same time.  Well, I can, but I make lots of mistakes and forget steps and all measuring skills fly right out the window!  All the "technical" part of my crafting brain is overridden by "Miss Chatty Crafty" as I am going to refer to her, so that perhaps naming it will help me to overcome this challenge.  However . . .

I find that my designer skills remain intact and are actually heightened when working side by side with a like minded creative.  I get a million a ideas (maybe that's I why I talk so much)!  So, fact number 2 is that I can brainstorm and design like a madwoman when crafting.  I like that.

So, back to the traveler's notebooks we were working on separately, but together.  Design turned out cute.  Execution sucked.  Dana is not very comfortable with a sewing machine, yet, but she's getting there.

So my job was to stitch up the notebooks.  I seriously couldn't think of a much easier task!  First mistake.  It seems the easier the task, the more it is something I could normally do in my sleep . . . turns into some major DUH moments!  Like sewing on the wrong side, forgetting how to adjust the tension on this particular machine that I've used a million times and thinking that I'll just "eyeball" some measurements and it'll be all good.  Hahaha!

NONE of these inbred skills work when I am chatting!
So moving onto the design now.  I think they turned out rather adorable, all previous mistakes notwithstanding, don't you think?  These little notebooks are passport size and will come in a three pack collection.  Two notebooks and a folder or pocket divider, dashboard or another cool accessory.  But it is not show here, because I talk too much and didn't have time to make it!

I used some sweet designer paper for the cover of the striped one and cut and stitched a little saying that was in the same paper pack, so all the colors looked beautiful together.  I took two coordinating papers and stitched them together to get the size I needed since I was using a 6x6 paper pad and had to have a bit more to work with.  I used black thread, not sure if I love that for this project . . . but that's what was in the machine and since we were just playing and experimenting, I didn't sweat that.

The second TN (traveler's notebook) cover is make from a fabric contact paper.  How cool is that?  The texture feels so neat!  The colors and large floral pattern worked awesome with the stripes of the first cover.  For the third piece in this collection, I think I would use a solid color.  Any shade of the greens or pinks would be pretty or even a creamy off-white color.  What do you think?  I think I would maybe make several so that you would have a choice, or least the 3 basic coordinating shades.

I also learned, or relearned rather, to make make stitches longer when stitching on paper or you will have perforated paper, which is cool thing, but only if that is your intention!  Again, DUH!

Here are a couple of cute paperclip accessories, right?  I made these, because I thought they would look super cute in the photo shoot.  I knew I was super tiered I this point, because I could not remember how to make these!  I mean, serious . . . it's like tying your shoes or brushing your teeth, you don't just forget!  I should have just quickly googled it, but I was too stubborn!

Anyway, I finally figured it out and wanted you to know that when you order these little cuties to go with Yourdori, you will be getting some very well thought out paperclips!   I may have to charge extra for my advanced knowledge.  Oh, puh-lease, right? ;)

Yesterday's visit and craft session with Dana was fantastic!   We actually got a lot done in the short amount of time she was here.  Wait, she was here for 7 hours, but it seriously only felt like 2 to 3, at the max!   Time flies.

Well, thanks for popping in guys!  I would love any feedback on these notebooks that you have.  And my question for you today is . . . are you a chatty crafter like me?  Or can you just whiz through a project, talk to your heart's content and BAM!!  Craft project complete!  It's seems I can only stay on task if I am teaching or designing, not actually "making" it.  Got any tips for me?

  1. LOL - what a FUN post. I am chatty, too, so I prepare ahead of time so I have something I can work on while visiting.

  2. No chatt'in for me. No way can I craft and talk. Or drive and talk. Most people are sorry when they get stuck with me when I have no project in my hands. Then I just talk and talk. I'm much better for the universe when I craft and craft! :)

I don't think you should change the thread. Black looks great!
